photos from "Research Night"

creating opportunities

This year, I am continuing in my role as a Research Peer Adviser, where I work towards increasing undergraduate involvement in research. I really liked planning events and meeting with students last year, so I am continuing to work on these initiatives this year. For Autumn quarter, I was able to hold a research night where labs could showcase their research and potentially recruit new undergraduate students. The turnout was definitely much higher than I had anticipated, but it was great news that so many people wanted to become involved in research and explore research opportunities. Although this will be my last year in the role since I graduate in the spring, I'm determined to continue making as much of a positive impact as I can on the undergraduate community while I'm still around!

enhancing sports

This quarter, I joined the Makeability Lab. I have done quite a bit of research before, but decided that I wanted to try joining a lab instead of just working with specific students. The specific project that I am working on focuses on using augmented reality to make sports like tennis and basketball more accessible for blind and low-vision people. I have really been enjoying this project because it uses computing devices like AR lenses to decrease social barriers for the blind and low-vision community. We have worked a lot on training a machine learning model to detect important parts of a game like the players, balls, nets, etc. I'm learning a lot about machine learning and augmented reality technologies, and I'm able to contribute perspectives from my past research. I'm looking forward to seeing everything come together as we prepare to run studies with users in the next few quarters.

returning to the podium

Building off of my past experience, I once again had the opportunity to conduct a UW ensemble again. I conducted the fifth movement of Lincolnshire Posy with the symphonic band. This time, I felt a lot more experienced and a lot more comfortable than the previous year, where I felt like I had a stronger understanding of how to really direct a group and polish a piece. While we didn't have many opportunities to rehearse with the group, I still had an amazing run-through that I was very proud of. There are always more ways to improve when it comes to musicmaking, but this was definitely a great step in my musicianship and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I have the opportunity to conduct another piece later this year, and I'm really looking forward to not only conducting again but also having more rehearsals and shaping the learning and playing of the piece as a whole.
