designing autonomy

This quarter, I took CSE 478 - Autonomous Robotics. Throughout the class, we worked with the MuSHR rally car system to drive autonomous routes. We learned about the fundamental components of an autonoumous system: modeling, localization, control, and planning. The end project was to drive the robot from one end of the building to the other end of the building. I had a lot of fun in this class because learning about autonomous movement in robotics was new to me despite being in robotics for many years at this point. The coursework was definitely challenging at times, especially because there was a lot of math during the lectures that I wasn't so familiar with, but I really enjoyed implementing the algorithms on the car itself and seeing the results of my efforts through watching the car move around. I look forward to implementing my own autonomous systems in the future with my new knowledge.

surveying future adventures

I had the opportunity to attend graduate school visit days at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as I was admitted to their PhD program in Informatics. Although I have not yet decided where I would like to pursue my graduate degree, this was a really fun experience because I got to meet people who cared about similar issues as me. In particular, as someone studying accessibility, it was amazing to meet designers and professors who really could envision the future of the world as a more accessible place. I got to explore the Beckman Institute, which was an amazing center for innovation and research and would be a great home for me. Overall, this experience made me reflect a lot on how regardless of my decision of where to go for school or for a career, I know I can be successful and make a meaningful impact on the communities around me.
